The Best Point Guard – Rajon Rondo Or Derrick Rose?

In a basketballs scoreboards feature, we compare Rondo and Rose, and ponder the big question — who is the greater?!

The point guard is a vital playing position in the NBA. This players is responsible for handing over the ball to the right player at the right time. There are two styles of playing at a point guard; offensive and defensive style. A point guard has to understand the coach’s game plan and execute it effectively. His contribution is key as it does not matter how great the players are around him; if the point guard is struggling the whole team will struggle.

The NBA basketball scoreboards have seen many fantastic point guards over the years, and as of now there are two point guards that are considered to be the best; they are Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose. The big question, however, is who is the best of these two greats? Well let’s take a look at each of these players separately.

Rajon Rondo plays for the Boston Celtics, one of the best teams in NBA. He is 6’1” and one of biggest reasons why the Celtics are doing so well. He keeps his calm during the game and is very tough physically as well as mentally. He is one of the most valuable players that the Celtics have ever had and without him they surely wouldn’t have been able to make it to the NBA finals. He plays with other great players like Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, and one of his challenging tasks is to keep them ‘under wraps’ as it were during the game. His 2009-2010 season averages were 13.7(PPG), 9.8(APG) and 2.3(SPG). He has an unusual way of making offensive rebounds, and he scores at least 10 points in almost every game.

Derrick Rose plays for the Chicago Bulls. He is 6’3” and a very strong and quick point guard. He has the physical tools that every good point guard should have, but he is not as tough mentally as Rondo. Rose is a fantastic leader and has a unique talent for the game, and this quality gives him the edge over most other point guards. He really needs to improve on his big weakness: outside shooting. His 2009-2010 season averages are 20.8(PPG), 6(APG) and 0.7(SPG).

Comparing these two only on the basis of statistics would not be fair. We should look at each of the player’s style of play to decide who is better. I think Rojan Rondo edges it in this sense although there is an age factor as Rondo is 24 and Rose is 21. Rondos extra experience over Rose is certainly telling. He has the X-factor that keeps him on the top of the game in his position. Give Rose a few years though, and I’m sure that he will catch up.
